A rule of prayer
for one ordinary day

Three fixed points — waking, the working hours, and sleep — built around the prayer Jesus gave when his disciples asked him this same question. Pray it as written until it becomes yours.

The readings Scripture is set in the text and verse numbering of the African Bible, so the references match your own copy if you want to read the fuller passage around them.
Start where you are

First light · before anything else

At waking

Before your phone, before the day's first demand. Five minutes, sitting up, unhurried.

Open

In the morning let me hear of your mercy, for in you I trust. Show me the path I should walk, for I entrust my life to you.Psalm 143:8

Say it once. Then sit still long enough to mean it.

The prayer he taught

Pray it slowly, stopping at each line to fill it with your own life. The line is the frame; you supply the day.

  • Our Father, who art in heaven, Say his name slowly. You are not addressing a stranger, and you are not the first to ask.
  • hallowed be thy name; Honour him before you ask him for anything. This order matters.
  • thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Name the decision you are carrying today and hand it over — out loud, in plain words.
  • Give us this day our daily bread, Ask for today only. Tomorrow is not yours to carry yet.
  • and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; Name what you did wrong. Then name the person you are still holding something against, and release them.
  • and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Name the one thing that most often takes you off course. Then stop — end with him, not with your list.
Matthew 6:9–13

Name the day

Walk through the hours ahead out loud: the people you will meet, the work you must do, the one thing you are dreading. Offer each to him as you name it. Then ask for one specific thing — not for everything.

Close

May the favour of the LORD our God be ours. Prosper the work of our hands! Prosper the work of our hands!Psalm 90:17

Between the offices · wherever you are

Through the hours

The point of the middle of the day is not to add another quiet time. It is to keep the thread from the morning unbroken.

The prayer you can breathe

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God,
have mercy on me, a sinner.

Breathe in on the first line, out on the second. Pray it walking, working, queueing, waiting. Repeat it until your attention comes back — that returning is the prayer, not a failure of it.

Short prayers for real moments

  • Before deciding Lord, thy will, not mine.
  • When anxious Cast your care upon the LORD, who will give you support. He will never allow the righteous to stumble.Psalm 55:23
  • When angry Have mercy on me — and on him.
  • When tempted Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.
  • When grateful Bless the LORD, my soul; all my being, bless his holy name!Psalm 103:1

One pause at midday

Stop for sixty seconds. Ask one question and answer it honestly: am I still walking with him, or have I been running on my own since breakfast? If the answer is the second, say the Jesus Prayer once and carry on. No self-punishment. Just turn back.

Last thing · the day laid down

Before sleep

Look back over the day with him before you close it. This is where honesty is formed — and honesty is what keeps you close.

The examination

  • Give thanks

Name three specific good things from today. Small ones count. Say them out loud.

  • Walk back through the hours

From waking to now. Where was he present? Where did you turn away, and what were you reaching for instead?

  • Confess plainly

No softening, no excuses, no grovelling either. Name it, and receive the forgiveness he has already promised.

  • Forgive

Release whoever wronged you today, so you do not carry it into tomorrow or into your sleep.

Ask

A clean heart create for me, God; renew within me a steadfast spirit.Psalm 51:12

The prayer he taught

Pray it again, whole, unhurried — the same words as this morning, now weighed against the day you actually lived.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.Matthew 6:9–13

Lie down

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me secure.Psalm 4:9

Say nothing after this. Let it be the last thing in your mind.
